As human beings, we have an innate connection to the natural world.
This connection is evident in our love for spending time in parks, walking in the woods, or simply enjoying a peaceful moment in our gardens. If you’ve met me me you will already know my love of trees – specifically ancient ones (they watch you more than you watch them and captivate me) but did you know that being in nature can boost your creativity and improve your overall wellbeing? Spending time around trees and breathing fresh air has a deep and profound impact on creative expression and happiness.
According to a study published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology, exposure to natural environments can significantly increase creativity levels. Researchers found that participants who went on a nature walk performed better on creative tasks than those who went on a walk in a town or city. This suggests that being in nature helps to free up our minds, allowing us to think more creatively and come up with innovative ideas.
Trees are not just beautiful and majestic; they also have numerous benefits for our physical and mental health too. We all know they produce oxygen which we need to thrive physically, but breathing fresh air has many benefits for our bodies and minds. Studies have shown that spending time in nature can help to lower stress levels, reduce anxiety and depression symptoms, and even boost our immune systems. All of these benefits can help to improve our overall wellbeing, making us happier, healthier, and more productive.
Trees calm us.
Trees have a natural ability to help us feel more relaxed and at ease. Their green foliage and gentle rustling leaves can be soothing and therapeutic, helping to reduce stress and promote a sense of calm. In fact, the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku, or “forest bathing,” has become increasingly popular, with people all over the world seeking out the calming and restorative benefits of spending time in nature.
When I’ve got creative block or am struggling with a personal or work problem – a walk will always help me (whether I feel I can spare the time or not!). It clears my mind, helps me understand the perspective and reconnects me with who I am.
Nature can serve as a reminder of our interconnectedness with the natural world. As we spend time around trees and breathe in fresh air, we are reminded of the importance of taking care of our planet and preserving the natural beauty that surrounds us. This sense of connectedness and purpose can help to boost our overall sense of wellbeing, making us feel more fulfilled and motivated.
Whether you’re a designer, artist, writer, musician or simply someone looking to improve your overall health, spending time in nature can help to free up your mind, boost your mood, and inspire your creativity.
So why not take a walk in the park, spend an afternoon in your garden, or go on a nature hike and see how being around trees can help to improve your wellbeing and creative expression?
