Sunny disposition

In Winter it’s important to seek sunlight. Did you know your mental and physical health can be affected by the amount of sunlight you get? So what are the benefits of being in the sun?

  1. Boosted Immune system and stronger bones Vitamin D is absorbed from sunlight and is great for your immune system and fighting germs. The sun is the best natural source of this valuable vitamin which also helps your body absorb calcium from your diet making your bones and teeth stronger.
  2. Mood Getting some sun increases your serotonin, helping to reduce the effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and can also help people with general anxiety and depression. Sunshine has more impact on mood than rainfall, temperature, or any other environmental factor.
  3. Lower blood pressure When sunlight hits your skin, your body releases nitric oxide into your blood which brings down blood pressure and improves heart health. Being outside in nature has also been proven to increase relaxation and happiness which in turn reduces blood pressure.
  4. Better sleep Sticking to regular light cycles helps the balance of serotonin and melatonin in your body. Getting enough light in the day can really impact how well you sleep at night.

Importantly the suns benefits do not centre around heat or a tan, and the sunny days of the colder seasons are just as beneficial. When the days are cold a cycle, a brisk walk or a run can warm you up whilst exposing you to a bit of sun – improving your mood and earning that hot chocolate when you get back home, which is something else to smile about!

If you find yourself feeling blue at this time of year you might find a light therapy lamp useful which mimics the benefits of the sun on your mood but nothing beats the sun on your face as you listen to the birds above you or the crunching snow beneath your feet.

Wishing you sunshine on your face and in your heart this Winter. Stay well.
