I am part of a networking group who understand what I do, my experience and expertise and they like me (I hope!) but they often struggle to create an opportunity for me to help their contacts, even if they can see it would make a difference.
In some ways it’s like telling someone their baby is ugly right? NOT an easy conversation…

So, I’ve been thinking about how to help them with this type of conversation. How do you open up a dialogue about such an integral part of someone’s business without causing offence? Telling someone their branding may not be effective requires tact and sensitivity.
This also doesn’t just apply to branding but to any aspect of business where you can see room for improvement, but they cannot.
Here’s a structured approach to providing constructive feedback:
1. Seek Permission First
What to say: “Would you be open to some feedback on your branding?” “Can I share some observations about your brand that might help improve its impact?”
2. Start with Positives
What to say: “Your business has some great strengths, like [mention specific positive aspects].” “I really like [mention something specific about their current branding].”
3. Point Out the Gaps
What to say: “There are a few areas where I think your branding could be even more effective.” “I’ve noticed some challenges that could be holding your brand back.”
4. Be Specific and Objective
What to say: “Your logo doesn’t seem to clearly convey what your company does. It might confuse potential customers.” “The colors and fonts you use are a bit inconsistent across different platforms, which I find confusing even though I am familiar with your business.”
5. Explain the Impact
What to say: “This inconsistency can lead to a lack of trust from potential clients.” “A more cohesive brand identity can help attract and retain more customers.”
6. Offer Solutions
What to say: “Working with a branding expert could really help in creating a more unified and appealing brand image.” “I know a great branding professional who has helped companies in similar situations.”
7. Be Supportive and Encouraging
What to say: “Improving these aspects can make a huge difference in how your brand is perceived.” “I’m confident that with the right adjustments, your brand can really stand out.”
By approaching the conversation in this way, you provide constructive feedback while being supportive and helpful, ultimately making it easier for the company owner to accept your suggestions for improvement.
